Jiu-Jitsu Letter

It’s interesting when we go into anything with some prior knowledge or expectations. Last weekend, I watched the Joker sequel, and I wonder how much I would’ve liked it if I hadn’t watched the first. I had no idea the sequel was a musical. But I’d watched the first one and I know some things about Batman, Joker, and the DC universe, and thought the second would be something like the first.

Recently, we had someone come in for an intro class. As I went to get him a loaner gi, he stopped me and said he’d brought his own gi. At that point, I was feeling 80% sure it was going to be his one and only class with us. When he came out of the changing room in black, I was at 90%. Then we chatted about his previous experience with wrestling and BJJ, and then I was 99% sure.

I’m careful not to let my assumptions change how I interact with students. I still gave 100% toward him. If I truly believe that what and how I teach is best for everyone, then it’s my responsibility to do my best for everyone, even if one of them doesn’t believe what and how I teach is best.

He seemed to enjoy class, and when it was over, he said we could talk about our 10-day trial. He ducked into the changing stall, then disappeared quickly without saying bye.

  1. To be fair though, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have liked this Joker movie even if I hadn’t seen the first. Maybe there was no way this prospect was going to join us. ↩︎
