Frank Mir was on Matt Serra’s podcast recently. We know jiu-jitsu is superior for many reasons, but here he discusses how it’s better to use jiu-jitsu compared to any striking art in a street fight.
In the street, that’s one thing to learn. I can be completely in the right. I get in an altercation at the bar, some guy slaps my wife on the ass, says something, you know, I tell him to apologize, he tells me to fuck off. Next thing you know, like, I put him to sleep, right? If I just put him to sleep, you know, hit a nice little arm drag, take his back, put him down, you know, it diffuses the situation.
If I blast him and bust his nose off, I’m in the right, cops show up, his fucking nose over here, you know what I mean? Like, people don’t realize it’s like, it’s not only the criminal, you know, situations you have to deal with with litigation, but there’s also like, stipple, getting sued, you know? People, I see them teach their kids Muay Thai, and I’m like, man, your 12 year old is a badass, but like, if he does that to any kids at school, you might be homeschooling them for the rest of his life, you know what I mean?
Like, That’s another aspect of grappling where it’s superior and it’s so much, for civilian life, it’s like more humane. It’s like, all right, look, I can really put you down. Hell, I actually could kill you if I wanted to with the same maneuver, but I can defuse the situation without, you know, looking like the menace and I don’t want to go home and spend the weekend in, you know, in jail.
