The first time you learn to dribble a basketball, no one’s guarding you.
You bounce the ball by yourself. Left hand, right hand, and maybe even between the legs. There’s no pressure.
Jiu-Jitsu is different. Show the armbar from guard, and the first question is what if they slam you. Show the triangle and the what-ifs start before they’ve tried it once.
Every technique goes through the same stages. First, recall the steps. Then perform them. Finally, add resistance.
When you go straight to resistance, you’re not learning the technique. You’re improvising against a problem you don’t understand yet.
Basketball players get to dribble in peace before someone tries to steal it. Give yourself that same patience.
